Life Solved Live: Where We Came From, Where We’re Going
Inaugural Lectures by Professor Ivan Jordanov and Professor James Darling.
How did Earth become a habitable planet within a dynamic solar system? And how, today, is our natural world inspiring breakthroughs in new forms of tech-driven intelligence? Join us to uncover the secrets of our planet’s past and discover pathways to an advanced future.
This Life Solved Live event is your chance to hear first-hand how researchers unravel mysteries and illuminate new frontiers of knowledge – and what drives them to do it.
An Inaugural Lecture is one of the most prestigious Life Solved Live events. It’s a celebration of the career of a professor and the difference they make.
On 3 June 2026 we present two fascinating lectures in one evening.
In Planetary Perspectives on Earth’s Dynamic Evolution, Professor of Earth and Planetary Science, James Darling, explores how insights from planetary science and terrestrial geology together illuminate the deep history of our planet.
Professor Darling says:
‘By studying Earth’s oldest rocks alongside samples from the Moon, Mars and asteroids, and probing them down to the atomic scale, it becomes possible to reconstruct the processes that shaped the early crust, the role of hypervelocity impacts in planetary evolution, and the conditions that led to the formation of major metal deposits and the emergence of life. These approaches reveal new perspectives on how our planet evolved and help to support the circular economy of critical raw materials.’
Professor Darling will also introduce the Institute of the Earth and Environment, a landmark initiative at the University of Portsmouth designed to bring disciplines together to address two fundamental questions: how our planet works, and how we can secure a sustainable future.
In Computational Intelligence – Nature Inspired Models and Their Applications, Professor of Computational Intelligence, Ivan Jordanov, will introduce the basics of Computational Intelligence and its two main technological paradigms: Artificial Neural Networks (NN) and Evolutionary Computation (EC). Both methodologies are inspired by nature: NN by the human brain and EC by natural evolution.
Professor Jordanov says:
‘I’ll begin with Global Optimisation and so-called Low Discrepancy Sequences, and the use of Genetic Algorithms as one example of EC. I’ll then consider Machine Learning (ML) – specifically, Deep ML NN architectures applied for solving supervised ML problems.
‘Finally, I’ll share examples of applying these methodologies in successful research projects which I led or took part in as a co-investigator – from web applications to areas of engineering, defence and security, and healthcare.’
Don’t miss this unique double bill of mind-expanding talks. To book your FREE tickets, select how many you want, then click the ‘Reserve a spot’ button.

Geometry Space Surrey 2026
The first edition of the Geometry Space Surrey workshop will take place this spring!
It is the first event of its kind, at the intersection of symplectic geometry and astrodynamics. Symplectic geometry has started producing more and more applications to astrodynamics and space mission design in the last two decades.
The goal of the event is to gather the two communities for three days, hold keynotes, research talks, and a poster session on topics at the interface of symplectic geometry, astrodynamics, and wider geometric techniques, in order to promote more collaboration between the two fields.
Format of the event:
3-days (June 8-10 2026) + optional visit of the SSTL (Surrey Satellite Technology Limited) facilities on the morning of June 11.
In-person.
Lunch and coffee breaks included.
Social dinner in Guildford on Tuesday June 9.
Research talks are 30 min (25 min + questions). Posters must be in A1 format. To present a research talk or a poster, submit an abstract before April 14th.
Register by May 14th to attend the workshop!
Southampton Space Photonics Day
The day will provide insight to industry into the University of Southampton’s photonics and optics for different space applications.
The day is for photonics companies and is designed to provide an introduction to the Southampton Space Institute and to highlight to industry our Photonics research; the Optoelectronics Research Centre and our world famous Cleanroom facilities, including the Cornerstone photonics foundry, where space photonics technologies are manufactured.
After a networking lunch there will be an ‘industry meets research’ session, where companies can meet photonics researchers face to face through a ‘speed dating’ activity. The day will round off with a recap on the links that have been made and a summary of potential collaborations we can follow up on. It promises to be a lively and proactive day with plenty of discussion and networking opportunities built in.
Objectives
Make broad range of UK space companies aware of the ORC capabilities and the potential for Cornerstone to enable access to its facilities
Run a 'speed-dating' session involving industry CTOs (or equivalents) and ORC experts to explore potential collaborations including possible funding routes (e.g. UKSA NSIP, ESA discovery, ESA GSTP etc.)
Outline agenda
Morning plenary presentation on SSI and ORC
Visit to ORC
Networking lunch
Afternoon 1-1 speed dating
Outcomes
At least three promising new collaborations

Reinventing Space Conference
This year's conference programme runs across three consecutive days, Monday 27 October – Wednesday 29 October, with the option to attend any or all days.
Each day will consist of a combination of talks from selected presenters, as well as dedicated panel sessions and invited Keynote talks aligned with each day's theme.
The conference will host a Gala Dinner on the evening of the second day, Tuesday 28 October, which will include the Sir Arthur Clarke Awards – this event is not to be missed!
The theme of this year's conference is ‘The Rapidly Changing Context of Global Space’ and will focus on the challenges and emerging issues presented by the increase in commercially funded activities, advances in technology, and the recent rapid changes in international relationships:
“We are facing a number of significant and rapidly accelerating changes that point towards an unprecedented shift in how we operate and collaborate in the international space arena. In particular, the compounding of three influential factors will change the operating context for all of us; The near-exponential drop in the cost of access to space; the integration of AI and automation into our upstream and downstream activities; and the effect of the changing geopolitics of space”
Technological, geopolitical and economic forces are all in play and this is a chance to talk about them collectively; what capabilities we should be investing in and how to reframe our priorities to remain relevant in this new era. The conference will encourage critical discussion and the assessment of the key assumptions and bold new ideas as we review our current activities and ask the question …have we got it right?
